170. This One's for My Girls

This one is for my girls. It’s also for your girls. And it’s for all of us women who are navigating our way through this world. In this episode, I’m talking to my girls. I’m sharing how I’m helping them gain awareness and experience, how to learn about their thought patterns, and how to be strong, independent women. This one is also for us mothers – the past doesn’t matter. How can you connect and build awareness with your daughters?

Key Takeaways

It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve baked cookies. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve said yes or no. It doesn’t matter what you did when they were younger. It doesn’t matter if you are working so much that you only have a certain amount of time to spend on a daily basis. It doesn’t matter.

All that matters is the awareness that you have for each other. It’s going to be that awareness that allows you to grow together now. It doesn’t matter what happened then, and even the future isn’t a great focus. But right now, in this moment, how can you become aware, and how can you connect now?

Learning From Our Daughters

Our children can teach us just as much as we teach them if we’re willing to listen and learn. Each experience of motherhood is different, we all have our own journey, and even within those journeys, each child will teach us something new.

Spending time with my daughters is a joy. From having postpartum depression at the birth of my first daughter to now experiencing all of life’s emotions, it’s the biggest pleasure I have. I love to teach them about themselves and how to be stronger than their thoughts.

Helping Our Daughters Learn Awareness

From my daughters, I learned the power of flexibility and how being flexible helps reduce the triggers I might face. It’s about creating awareness and helping our daughters learn awareness. About themselves, about life, about their relationships with others, and so much more.

It’s not about being there every second of the day; in fact, I think it’s so powerful for our daughters to see women succeed in their careers. It’s about being there when it matters. Listening, creating better experiences for your daughters, and doing all we can to nurture and help our wonderful girls grow into incredible, well-adjusted, and flexible women.

How do you define your experiences as a parent? Let me know in the comments below!

Quotes

“The way that I look at my daughters is [asking], what can I teach them? What can they teach me?” [9:47]

“I think what we can do for the girls, for all the girls, for all of our girls, as we go through it and as we do this work on our own, is to help them gain awareness.” [12:48]

“If you’re struggling with thinking that you’re not showing up enough, or that you haven’t done the right thing from the beginning, or all the things that you’re doing wrong… Think about all the things that you are doing so very right.” [16:48]

“As a parent, I can help create experiences by listening. These are basic, simple things that have really transformed how I view myself as a mom so that I can gain greater acceptance for myself.” [24:10]

“When I start to think and question who I am as a mom, how I’m showing up for the girls, how I can do better, I realize that whatever has happened in the past has happened, and that’s that. All I have is this moment, and all I can do is make the next best decision as their mom in this moment. What does that look like? It looks like holding the safe space for them to be their individuals, knowing that they can get through anything.” [27:53]
